Our chosen charity: the Cornish Seal Sanctuary

At CECL, we’re proud to support the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, a registered charity based in Cornwall, UK, that rescues, rehabilitates, and releases seals and seal pups along the UK coastline. Here’s a bit more insight into the important work that the sanctuary carries out, why the partnership matters so much to us, and how we originally got involved.

Why did we choose the Cornish Seal Sanctuary?

As a business rooted in maritime trade, we care deeply about healthy oceans and coastal communities, and, as our mascot, Cecil, is a seal, it was an obvious choice to support a charity linked to these fascinating mammals. Having been introduced to the Sanctuary, we appreciated how much its mission aligns with our sustainability values and commitment to responsible logistics. Their work doesn’t just involve rescuing individual animals, but also educating visitors and the broader public about the pressures on our seas and the importance of marine conservation.

About the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and its mission

The Sanctuary responds to callouts for injured, orphaned, or malnourished seals spotted in local coastal waters and on beaches. Using a specially equipped rescue vehicle, they transport the seals back to their veterinary hospital at their base in Gweek, near Falmouth. Their dedicated, expert team provides veterinary care and rehabilitation, always aiming to release healthy animals back into the wild eventually. In cases where rescued animals cannot be safely released back into the wild, the Sanctuary provides a permanent home and ongoing care.

Education and awareness-raising are also key to the Sanctuary’s mission, with a commitment to educating and inspiring future generations to protect all types of marine life and the seas that form their habitat. They welcome visitors and school groups to see their resident seals up close, with viewing pools and an underwater tunnel. The team also provides educational talks, behind-the-scenes tours and hands-on experiences such as “Keeper For The Day”, allowing visitors to better understand the realities of animal care.

Sustainability and our shared social responsibilities

Our partnership with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is part of a broader sustainability strategy that reflects our commitment to working toward a safer, healthier maritime environment. Beyond our charity work, we’re focused on reducing our operational footprint by helping our clients optimise routes, consolidate freight, and select greener options wherever available. If that resonates with your business, then we’d love to hear from you.

Would you like to get involved?

Healthy seas sustain all of us. We’re proud to stand with our friends at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and will continue to support their vital work – one rescue, one rehab, and one release at a time. We’d encourage all of our customers and partners to check out the work they do and consider becoming a supporter too. Their website is https://sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org/en/
